21st Century Beat

Robby had a daydream it came as he lay in sweat and lethargy
at thirty-one watching the death of summer through an open
window in his rented cell it just blew in hot with the dust
and skipped like a- skipped- a record needle and dust the grooves
embedded slam-danced on the floorboards dust so goddamn
thick it left grit between his teeth and his head rocking in
feedback-drenched delirium while below in- below in-
                below in the street streetkids
were barefoot laughter and back forth back forth marched the whores
in smiles sweat sirens screamed as fires billowed industrial in the
distance eyes mouths mirages of faces horns barked scattered
gods fell from artificial heights assembly men hung from
half-mast flag poles white picket- pick- white picket dry-rotted
                God Bless America!
fences and severed heads and stench of dollar store celebrities
stained the white sky like- stained the white sky like- unchanged underwear
like enigmatic enemas! enemas! he laughed as the daydream held him
pinned-to-mattress like the smack addicts fading away in alleyways
of desperate crashing numb to the asphalt in chaos waves and
waves of dust spiraling in the fan- in the fan- spiraling in the fan
                laughing playing hide-and-seek
with tether-ball neurons firing round the room no prayers hymns
lullabies ballads bottles drawn from the Lethe to pull him out of it just
Robby carving elegies in advance in the peeling splinter headboard
with his fing- headboard with his fing- fingernails elegies for the
barefoot laughter the whores junkies everyone.
